Last night the inaugural meeting of Photo Betties was held in Drexel Hill – and it was a huge success! We had 9 enthusiastic attendees and engaged in great discussion about our passion for photography, as well as brainstormed about future events and possibilities for the organization.

Heather and I were excited to see not only a great turnout, but a group comprised of such diversity – while we are all talented photographers with the same great passion for our art form, we come from such different backgrounds that bring our own unique experience and perspective to the table. We had women who are moms (and expectant moms!), former mathematicians, lawyers, teachers, Microsoft Certified computer specialists, graphic designers, fashion & fine artists, anthropologists and creative marketers! It’s a true testament to the passion and commitment that we all have to our businesses and the pursuit of photography that we have all come from different walks of life and taken the proverbial leap into an industry fraught with competition and embraced it without ever looking back.

We asked all the Betties to bring along a photo that moved them to allow us all to get to know one another better. Among them, we talked about Margaret Bourke-White, Dana Neibert, Henri-Cartier Bresson and were introduced to family or personal images that told touching stories about how photography truly creates a piece of immortality. If there is one thing we could all agree on, it was that the images we capture have meaning beyond even our comprehension – and that is what makes this job so incredible.

So again, Why Photo Betties?

The key objective for the night’s get-together was discussing how the organization can benefit members. Essentially, we want the group to grow and evolve based on the needs of its members. To create an open forum and network from which we can all tap into for resources, support, ideas, guidance and prosperity. We also recognized that being in business for yourself has it’s benefits, but also presents unique challenges. What happens if you’re on your way to a wedding and you get into a car accident and desperately need a back up? When your calendar is booked but you want to refer an inquiry somewhere that you can feel confident will deliver? Who do you rely on when you have a challenging situation with a client? Where do you go when you need random inspiration? What do you do when your husband has heard you complain for the last time about post-production woes and you’re completely strung out and overworked? Photo Betties to the rescue!

Beyond serving as a network of resources, Photo Betties also aims to create opportunities to give back to the community. Our skilled trade is truly invaluable to so many great causes – through volunteer efforts (suggested by all of our members) we can provide our service for those who can most benefit from our contribution. Some ideas that were mentioned were holding a “Portrait Day” for lower income families, extending photography services to PAWS, families with disabled children, adoption agencies and more.

In addition to (or in place of) regular meetings, Photo Betties will organize speaker seminars that will feature experts and professionals that impact our industry to help enrich our personal businesses. Event specialists, designers, accountants, florists, photographers from different genres (to inspire new approaches to our own bodies of work), and photographers who have reached outstanding achievement, that can help bring knowledge to our network. Outside of meetings, arranged events such as First Friday tours and meet-ups at industry events and local businesses are part of the plan to bring Photo Betties outside of our homes and into the community.

Finally, we talked about the blog. We hope that all Betties will contribute their ideas, thoughts, experiences and resources to the blog to create a centralized, personalized place that we all can go to stay in touch and abreast of everything that is happening in our great industry. We welcome submissions from everyone and need everyone’s contribution to make the website a valued destination from which we can all benefit.

So… suffice it to say we are incredibly excited about what’s to come ahead and will be staying in touch with ideas to keep this great momentum moving forward!

Special thanks to Jim for set up and clean up, and for taking shots of the Betties during the event and to Ana Gray, for being the youngest contributor to our discussions. 🙂

Thanks to all the Betties who attended last night – we’re looking forward to meeting many more of you at the next event!
